About this event

Crafted in Legacy: A Jewelry-Making Workshop Jewelry tells a story about who we are and where we come from. In this workshop, you'll create your own custom piece while learning about the Black designers who shaped the world of fine and costume jewelry. We begin with a short talk on William F. "Bill" Smith (1933-1991), the New York designer who became the first Black recipient of the Coty Award for costume jewelry design in 1970. Known for bold, architectural designs with African-inspired motifs, Smith created pieces for socialites, actresses, and models, and became one of the few "named" designers at Cartier America. His work is a reminder of what happens when vision, heritage, and craft come together. Then it's your turn. With guidance from our facilitator, you'll sketch a design, choose from beads, wire, chain, and charms, and learn simple techniques to make a necklace, bracelet, or earrings that is entirely your own. You'll wear your creation home. No experience needed. All materials and tools are provided. Cost: Free
