About this event
ANTON ART CENTER TO HOST NEW EXHIBIT OF ORIGINAL PAINTINGS BY BARBARA CLAY
The Anton Art Center’s second floor gallery is featuringa solo exhibition titled, Barbara Clay: Finding My Way, an exhibition of over fifty original paintings by artist Barbara R. Clay. The exhibition will run October 24 through December 23, 2026 with an Opening Reception & Artist Talk on the 24th from 1pm to 3pm.
In just the last ten years, Clay has exhibited her work in 46 exhibitions at 16 galleries and received 23 jury awards, as well as three artwork selections accepted to the permanent collection at Henry Ford Hospital. She cites among influential mentors: August Gloss, Meighen Jackson, Sally Cooper, and The Thursday Brushes artist group.
An artist, student, and explorer, Clay considers herself an ‘intuitive painter’ with artwork that often displays natural scenery or celebrates a cherished memory or feeling using colorful, contrasting palettes and softened, gestural brushstrokes.
Says Clay: “My references come mostly from within; I favor leaving the door open to the unknown. My process begins by choosing the colors I want to work with and making initial marks on the canvas. The marks give me something concrete to respond to. I build my paintings through exploration, passion, and persistence.”
Clay is a member of the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors, Romeo Guild of Arts, Starkweather Arts Center, and the Mount Clemens Artist Association. She is a retired teacher and life-long Michigan resident.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Oakland University and a Teaching Certificate from the Mercy College of Detroit, Waldorf Institute. She worked as a teacher at Chippewa Valley Schools and Glen Lake Community Schools and later in Mount Clemens in business management and ownership.
Recent and new works on exhibit are available for sale with a same-day purchase and take-home option available.
Gallery Hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm. Holiday Hours begin on November 14th with the opening of the Holiday Market, which extended hours to add Sundays from 11am-3pm.
