  • Rescue crews from Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue and The Karens have been saving dogs left exposed in extreme cold since last night — Frosty was rescued and is safe at a vet hospital while other strays remain in urgent need in Metro Detroit.  FOX 2 Detroit

  • A Southfield family saw its $450 towing charge reduced to $145 after 7 News Detroit and Livonia police stepped in following an icy accident on Five Mile Road and Fairfield Road in Livonia.  WXYZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Aldi confirmed two new stores will be built in Michigan by the end of 2026, with one opening in Southfield this spring and another under construction in Lowell to open later this year (adding to the state's 121 existing locations).  Hometown Life

  • Southfield residents are advised to prepare for a winter storm forecasted to cause power outages this weekend; local stores + online retailers offer portable power stations, emergency blankets, and rechargeable lanterns to help families stay ready during the cold weather.  Hometown Life

HEALTH NEWS

  • Sub-zero temperatures are prompting warming centers to open across Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties to help residents today—centers such as Orion Recreation Center and Caroline Kennedy Library are available for those in need.  WXYZ
  • Testing on Jan. 13 showed no Legionella at the Oakland County Sheriff's Office Administration Building after earlier positive tests led to flushing water systems and adding filters. County Executive Dave Coulter said the county will continue rigorous testing to protect employee and public health.  The Detroit News
