  • USA TODAY Co. announced Monday, Jan. 26 that it will acquire The Detroit News while keeping it as a separate paper, expecting to complete the deal by month’s end (the purchase is backed by cash and Apollo Global Management financing).  MLive

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Schools have nearly reached their limit of six snow days after closing Monday and last Friday, as harsh winter weather persists. Under state rules, officials may add up to three extra days if districts provide a clear reason (a condition that must be met before the end of the school year).  WXYZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Researchers reported that the Great Lakes were 43% frozen as of Jan. 25, with Lake Erie nearly iced over at 92% (a deep freeze followed an Arctic air surge beginning Jan. 22), and experts expect ice to grow further as cold conditions persist.  Hometown Life
  • Conservationists are working to protect Sibley Prairie, a rare natural habitat with unique flora and fauna in Metro Detroit. The effort was highlighted on Jan. 26 as part of plans to preserve the prairie’s exceptional ecosystem.  FOX 2 Detroit

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tax season began Monday, Jan. 26 when the IRS and Michigan’s Department of Treasury started accepting 2025 returns, with federal and state filings due by April 15. Taxpayers may request a six-month extension to file but must pay taxes on time to avoid penalties — check USPS requirements when mailing returns.  Hometown Life

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Homeowners in Southfield are encouraged to brighten their spaces with low-light house plants this winter. Michigan State University Extension educator Melanie Fuhrmann and local garden center owner George Papadelis advise watering only when the topsoil is dry and placing plants away from cold drafts (like near windows) for best survival.  Southfield Sun
