ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Residents in Oakland County finished a two-year RainSmart Rebates pilot program that diverted 1.4 million gallons of stormwater from sewers, with nearly 300 homeowners installing rain gardens, trees, and barrels. The program, which served the George W. Kuhn Drain district (including Southfield), helped lower local flood risks.  FOX 2 Detroit

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • GLWA is considering a nearly 13% increase in water and sewer rates that could raise costs for Metro Detroit residents, with a board vote scheduled for today at a local meeting. City officials warn the hike will stretch budgets as the authority invests in aging infrastructure.  WXYZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Homeowners who see icicles on their gutters may have an ice dam caused by poor insulation and warm air melting the roof. Local expert Adam Helfman advises checking insulation and calling a professional to remove the ice safely.  FOX 2 Detroit

SPORTS NEWS

  • Southfield resident Shawn Smith will serve as the head referee at Super Bowl LX on Feb. 8 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara for the game featuring the Patriots and Seahawks. This marks his 11th postseason assignment and is his first Super Bowl (a notable milestone for him).  Southfield Sun
  • The Michigan High School Athletic Association announced on Tuesday that high school athletes can now earn money through personal branding with opportunities like endorsements and social media promotions (rules state that school logos and mascots must not be used), effective Jan. 27.  FOX 2 Detroit
