COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Residents can explore a weekend of events across Metro Detroit from Jan. 29-Feb. 1. In Southfield, Winter Fest offers indoor and outdoor fun (2-4 p.m. Feb. 1 at Southfield Sports Arena), while additional shows in Grosse Pointe, Troy and Novi feature home, art and RV events.  Southfield Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • An arctic air mass has expanded ice across the Great Lakes since Jan. 26. Lake Erie is over 90% ice-covered and the cold weather will allow for moderate extra ice growth and a delayed spring.  CBS News Detroit
  • The Great Lakes provide conditions for lake-effect snow when cold air meets warm lake water — creating narrow bands that drop light, fluffy snow from November to February, which may lead to whiteout conditions and travel delays in the area.  CBS News Detroit

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Great Lakes Water Authority holds a meeting today at 2 p.m. at its water board building to consider a proposed 13 percent water and sewer rate hike for the 2027 fiscal year—if approved, water rates would rise 6.8 percent and sewer rates 5.9 percent to fund infrastructure improvements.  WXYZ
  • A 2024 study by TRIP found that Michigan drivers face extra repair costs from worsening potholes as warming weather speeds up freeze-thaw cycles. MDOT urges Southfield motorists to report hazardous potholes by calling 888-296-4546 or using its online form.  Hometown Life
  • Southfield drivers have experienced a bumpy ride on 10 Mile Road before Lahser Road due to cracks and winter freeze expansion, and the county plans reconstruction in 2027 to repair the issue (experts note water in the cracks causes the bumps).  WXYZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Orangetheory Fitness is offering a $2 per day promotional membership through Saturday, Jan. 31 in Southfield; the deal provides expert coaching and full body workouts for those keeping their New Year's fitness resolutions.  Hometown Life
  • On Jan. 28, Oakland County officials reported Legionella bacteria in water systems at the North Oakland Health Center and the Resource and Crisis Center (special water filters have been installed, systems flushed, and follow-up tests planned) with no known illnesses linked to the findings.  CBS News Detroit

SPORTS NEWS

  • Southfield mother-daughter duo Ninotchka Jackson-Wright and Kyla Wright, chosen as 2025 Detroit Lions Fans of the Year, are vying for the Ultimate NFL Fan of the Year title; voting ends at 11:59 p.m. Feb. 7 and the winner will be announced during the Super Bowl on Feb. 8.  Southfield Sun
