- ➤ Michigan is celebrating the 100th anniversary of Black History Month after Gov. Whitmer and Lt. Gov. Gilchrist issued a Feb. 2 proclamation and the House passed a resolution on Feb. 4. The month honors Black Americans and began as Negro History Week in 1926 by Carter G. Woodson. Hometown Life
- ➤ Southfield Parks and Recreation is hosting Rhythm of Our Roots, a free music festival celebrating Black History Month on Feb. 7 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Southfield Pavilion (26000 Evergreen Road) featuring internationally touring jazz violinist Evan Garr, Detroit Youth Choir, and soul singer Spyder Turner. ECONOMY NEWS
- ➤ Following a jobs report released on Feb. 5 that showed job openings fell to their lowest level since Sept. 2020, Oakland University Associate Professor Michael Greiner explained that the drop could signal upcoming economic challenges. FOX 2 Detroit
GOVERNMENT NEWS
- ➤ Multiple ramps at the I-696 and I-75 interchange will close in early March as Michigan’s multi-year I-696 project moves forward. Detours using M-53 (Van Dyke Avenue) and M-102 (8 Mile Road) are set until ramp, drainage, and bridge work finish by early summer. MLive
HEALTH NEWS
- ➤ Oakland County officials reported that recent tests showed no Legionella at the courthouse but detected the bacteria at the sheriff's administration building. The county began flushing water last month (following an earlier positive case) to protect employees and the public. The Detroit News
