Good morning, Southfield.

Southfield resident Shana White, who once experienced homelessness, now leads her nonprofit Picking Up The Pieces to help families transform empty homes into comfortable living spaces by providing essential household items.

Jessica Burrell said the makeover of her small apartment — which now comfortably accommodates her six children — shows White’s dedication to supporting families in Southfield.

Southfield partnered with Oak Park and Detroit as part of the Eight Mile Boulevard Association’s Let There Be Light Gateway crowdfunding campaign—aiming to install 12 multicolor lights under the Eight Mile bridge at Greenfield Road and the Lodge Freeway for improved safety and art—and seeks to raise $50,000 by May 23 using matching funds from the Michigan Economic Development Corporation; if the goal is met, installation will begin this summer for an area traveled by over 100,000 people daily.

Michigan officials remind residents to update their driver’s licenses to Real ID by May 7 so they can fly & access federal sites.

More than 74% have upgraded while offices add extra appointments to meet the high demand.

Michigan’s Department of Transportation warned residents today that scam toll texts with misspellings, fake links and urgent language are fraudulent — residents should ignore these messages and report them to SPAM at 7726 or the Federal Trade Commission since MDOT does not request payment or personal information by text.
