CRIME NEWS

  • In January, four more men from an alleged auto theft ring were charged for stealing over 400 vehicles worth $8 million—three face a pretrial on May 8 with a trial set for Aug. 4, following earlier arrests made last May with help from multiple police agencies across metro Detroit.  Southfield Sun

  • The Detroit Institute of Arts announced that its 2025 Inside|Out program will display art reproductions in Oakland County communities from May until October—artworks include Norval Morrisseau’s 'Cycles' at the Auburn Hills campus, Wadsworth Jarrell’s 'Woman Supreme' in Madison Heights, and Vincent van Gogh’s 'Portrait of Postman Roulin' in Waterford.  Southfield Sun

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Monarch butterflies left Mexico on their annual northward flight weeks ago and were spotted near Michigan in Warrenville on April 6 and Milford on April 20. Officials say the colorful insects will soon breed in Michigan as temperatures warm and urge residents to report sightings (using Journey North) to track their migration.  Hometown Life
  • A report released April 23 shows Metro Detroit ranked sixth worst for year‑round air pollution with 6.2 days of unhealthy ozone and 8.5 days of unhealthy particle pollution recorded last year. In 2024, six air quality advisories were issued—residents are advised to postpone high-pollution activities as policymakers face calls for stronger action.  CBS News Detroit

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Gov. Whitmer announced Tuesday that funding from the Michigan Strategic Fund Board will support new redevelopment projects in Ferndale and Southfield. In Ferndale a blighted lot will become Vester Flats with 72 new housing units, commercial space and 54 parking spots — in Southfield, the Middlepointe project will add 577 residential spaces, a parking deck, ground-floor retail, two pocket parks and a pedestrian greenway.  CBS News Detroit
