  • The Oakland County Sheriff's Office and DG Realty Group are partnering for a bike drive on Saturday, May 17 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.—an annual effort to collect new and used bikes, helmets, and accessories to help kids in need. Donations will be accepted at designated sites in Birmingham.  WXYZ
  • Both directions of I-696 in Oakland County are completely closed as a bridge is demolished—westbound traffic will reopen May 19 while eastbound remains closed during road rebuilding.  FOX 2 Detroit

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Gas prices in Michigan fell 15 cents from last week to an average of $3.06 per gallon for regular unleaded gas—metro Detroit rates dropped eight cents to about $3.09 per gallon. A full 15-gallon tank now costs roughly $45, which is $12 lower than last year's peak prices.  WXYZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Troy's District Court Judge Kirsten Nielsen Hartig will stop handling criminal cases on May 27 — Judge Maureen McGinnis will take over those cases. Hartig will still handle civil, landlord-tenant, and small claims matters after an order from Chief Judge Travis Reeds — no comments have been made by the involved parties.  The Detroit News

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Detroit-based nonprofit, the Black Mothers Breastfeeding Association, has released a report calling for a statewide doula network to help reduce high maternal mortality and pregnancy complications. The report urges lawmakers to provide sustainable funding and equitable compensation while noting that Black women in Michigan face higher risks during childbirth — a challenge that continues to affect local communities.  The Detroit News
