  • Angel Melendez-Ortiz — a Romulus man — pleaded no contest to 10 charges including second-degree murder for a wrong-way crash that killed a Farmington Hills couple returning from a date night last year, leaving six children without parents and he will serve at least 74 years behind bars.  Fox 2 Detroit
  • Southfield doctor Gireesh Velugubanti appeared in court after he was named in a sex trafficking investigation that showed he traded medical care for commercial sex and arranged crack cocaine for himself and others—he received a $500,000 bond and will return on July 10 at 8:30 a.m.  Fox 2 Detroit

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Officials say two Oakland County beaches—Cass Lake in West Bloomfield and Emerald Lake in Troy—are closed for swimming today after tests showed E. coli counts above the safety limit of 300 per 100 milliliters, likely due to wildlife. Local health departments advise swimmers to check beach conditions before entering the water.  Hometown Life

  • Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel warned that if the Supreme Court overturns the ruling on same-sex marriage, the state ban will come into effect until voters repeal it on the ballot in 2026, and this could roll back rights for same-sex couples.   • Plymouth Township competitor Philip Scott, who manages anxiety, autism and OCD, competed on American Ninja Warrior on June 16 and advanced to the semi-finals with his friend Ethan Gardulski.
