A portion of I-696 is closed at Couzens in Madison Heights due to a jackknifed semi-truck that spilled oil on the roadway—officials have not determined if anyone was injured or when the road will reopen, and a detour is available at 11 Mile and I-75.

As of July 31, Canadian wildfire smoke led Michigan officials to issue an air quality advisory for the entire state, with some areas like Marquette (217 air reading) showing very unhealthy conditions.

The advisory urged residents (especially those with asthma or heart disease) to limit outdoor time and watch for breathing problems.

Michigan's environmental agency extended a statewide air quality advisory through Saturday because wildfire smoke from Canada is raising pollution levels to unhealthy ranges—although some parts of the Lower Peninsula may see brief relief today, residents in sensitive groups are advised to limit outdoor activity.

Today some Michigan Social Security recipients who began benefits before May 1997 will receive their checks while others get payments on August 13th, 20th, and 27th based on their birth dates—recipients who were overpaid may get smaller checks as the agency starts its recoupment process.

Michigan law says drivers must use the left lane only for passing on roads with two lanes & can use it for travel on freeways with three or more lanes while truck drivers must stay in the right lanes.

Officials say drivers who slow and block traffic in the left lane may be ticketed & the law aims to keep traffic moving safely.
