CRIME NEWS

  • Southfield police are asking for help after 17-year-old Trinity Bennett went missing from her home on Aug. 19 at 9:30 p.m. while wearing a yellow nightgown.  Click on Detroit
  • Andrew Middlebrooks, a 33-year-old former Metro Detroit investment fund owner, was sentenced to 100 months in prison for a wire-fraud scheme that tricked 97 investors into losing over $34 million—he used false statements about his fund’s performance to lure in new clients.  MLive

ECONOMY NEWS

  • Qualifying Michigan residents can apply now for a tax credit—if they meet income limits—to help offset heating bills this winter. Renters and homeowners must mail their form to the Michigan Department of Treasury by Sept 30 to receive assistance with their utility bills.  Fox 2 Detroit

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Semaj J. Morgan Foundation will hold its Annual Back to School Giveaway on Sunday, August 31—from 1 to 4 p.m.—at the Sound Mind Sound Body Community Engagement Center, offering free backpacks, school supplies and fun for local kids.   • Southfield Public Schools held a back-to-school fair on Aug. 14 to share plans for upgrades such as new heating and cooling systems, improved safety features, new security technology, and a brand-new K-12 campus built with funds from a capital improvement bond. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Southfield will use more than $1M from SEMCOG to build a nearly mile-long, 10-foot-wide shared-use pathway along the south side of Nine Mile Road that will connect the 9Line Trail and City Centre Trail — boosting safety and access for pedestrians, cyclists, and auto drivers. City officials said construction may begin in 2026 and new signs and branding will be discussed at the upcoming City Council meeting.  The Detroit News
