  • Samaritan's Feet provided new shoes to deserving children at Legacy Charter Academy on Wednesday to help them start the school year strong. The nonprofit hopes the donation will boost student confidence — a move that may encourage more local support.  FOX 2 Detroit
  • Stevenson Elementary on Lahser Road in Southfield held a ribbon-cutting today to mark over $20M in renovations—introducing a secured vestibule, new surveillance, classrooms, a fine arts wing and an all-abilities playground.   • Westbound I-696 at I-75 is closed in Oakland County due to a downed power line; DTE Energy crews + MDOT officials are working to install a new wire and pole and plan to reopen the road before rush hour.  WXYZ

  • Costco recalled its Kirkland brand Signature Prosecco Valdobbiadene after warning that unopened bottles could shatter when handled—customers in Michigan and 11 other states who bought the product from April 25 to August 26 are advised not to open the bottles and to get a refund at their local store.  CBS News Detroit

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program—DAPCEP trains Michigan students in hands-on STEM skills every Saturday, with 800 spaces available this fall at costs from $25 to $100. The program builds on 50 years of experience to connect young learners with corporate partners and create a pipeline for future energy and e-mobility jobs.  FOX 2 Detroit

HEALTH NEWS

  • Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an executive directive on September 17 that orders state agencies to work with providers to offer COVID-19 vaccines and ensure that Medicaid and private insurance cover their costs — the decision follows recommendations from leading health groups.  CBS News Detroit
  • Two cases of hand, foot and mouth disease were confirmed at University K-12 Academy on 12 Mile Road in Lathrup Village — the school district sanitized the campus, worked with the Oakland County Health Department, and urged parents to keep symptomatic students home for three to five days.  CBS News Detroit

  • Southfield and Lawrence Tech will break ground on a new all-turf softball field on Sept. 19th from 11 a.m. to noon at the Municipal Campus at 26000 Evergreen Road—this partnership will provide a home field for LTU’s women’s softball team and will be completed by fall.  Southfield Sun
  • Southfield Christian's 10-year-old basketball player Delsea Hall is competing in the Colossal Youth Athlete of the Year tournament where each vote supports cancer research and youth empowerment. She led her team last season with a 15-point average and is in the quarterfinals for a chance to win $25,000 and a 3Brand ad in Sports Illustrated — semifinals voting ends today at 7 p.m.  Southfield Sun
