  • The Michigan Department of Natural Resources reminded residents this October that buying certified, heat-treated firewood from within 50 miles is best to avoid spreading harmful insects—such as the emerald ash borer and Asian longhorned beetle—and fungal diseases that can weaken local trees. The agency warned that moving aged or infested wood risks the spread of invasive species and tree diseases.  WXYZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Local TSA officers in Metro Detroit kept working during the government shutdown as delayed paychecks raised uncertainty—union president Gregory Simpkins said. Vice president Derrick McGary added that workers faced growing pressure while waiting for pay—this mounting stress affected local airport operations.  FOX 2 Detroit
  • The American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan is asking a judge to grant a bond hearing for Jose Contreras-Cervantes, a 33-year-old father with life-threatening leukemia held in a pending deportation case since August. His lawyer said he received inconsistent care and was moved to a facility three hours from his Detroit-area home—raising concerns about his due process.  WXYZ
