If you voted in Oakland County on Tuesday, you weighed in on a tax a lot of your neighbors backed. The Detroit Zoo was leading 70%-30% in Oakland County, 71%-29% in Macomb and 79%-21% in Wayne, according to unofficial results from the Nov. 3 election.

Jeff Sell of the , which also runs the Belle Isle Nature Center, told Local 4 the millage is a “vital, stable source of funding.” Because it's a renewal, WDIV reported it would not raise property taxes.

  • Term: 10 years, 2028 through 2037
  • Share of the zoo's operating revenue: about one third
  • Rate: unchanged from 2008 and 2016 approvals
  • Money is subject to independent audits made public

The renewal would cost about $10 a year on a $200,000 home

A separate 0.2-mill museum levy was tighter early. BridgeDetroit reported 53% support in Oakland County, with 15% of the vote counted. If it fails in either Oakland or Wayne County, the authority behind it will dissolve.
