π BACK TO OUR ROOTS β WHERE IT ALL BEGAN! β€οΈ
Before Motor City Mitten Mission became the organization it is today, it all started with plastic bags, helping hands, and a simple mission to make a difference!
In 2018, MCMM began by transforming discarded plastic grocery bags into handmade sleeping mats and pillows for individuals experiencing homelessness. What started as a small act of kindness grew into an organization providing street outreach, emergency shelter assistance, and supportive services to thousands of individuals and families in need.
Now, as part of our 7th annual Hunger & Homelessness Awareness Week, we're bringing back the Plarn Farm!
π§Ά WHAT IS PLARN?
Plarn is short for plastic yarn . By cutting, looping, and connecting plastic grocery bags, volunteers create durable yarn that can be crocheted into sleeping mats and pillows for our unhoused neighbors.
These handmade mats provide a barrier between individuals and the cold, damp ground while giving discarded plastic bags a meaningful second purpose.
β»οΈ COME GET YOUR PLARN ON!
Whether you're a longtime MCMM volunteer who remembers our original Plarn Farm or someone who has never heard of plarn before, we invite you to join us!
No experience is necessary! We'll show you how to get involved, from sorting and cutting bags to making plarn and crocheting mats.
Bring your family, friends, coworkers, church group, or organization and spend a little time making something that can bring comfort to someone in need.
This is a wonderful opportunity for people of different ages and abilities to volunteer together, learn about homelessness, and experience the joy of giving back.
π GOOD FOR OUR NEIGHBORS. GOOD FOR OUR PLANET.
Over the years, Motor City Mitten Mission's plarn initiative has helped keep more than 8 million plastic bags out of landfills while producing over 5,000 handmade sleeping mats for individuals experiencing homelessness.
It's a powerful reminder that something as simple as a plastic grocery bag can become an act of kindness.
β€οΈ HELP US CELEBRATE WHERE IT ALL BEGAN!
Stop by for an hour or stay for the day! Every helping hand makes a difference, and every mat represents compassion, dignity, and hope.
