  • Bookstock, Metro Detroit’s largest used book sale, will run from April 27 to May 4 at Laurel Park Place where nearly 500,000 books, CDs, DVDs, records and more will be sold for $1 to $6 to support literacy and education programs. Volunteers will fill the tables—using moving trucks to deliver donated boxes—and offer special discounts during the week, including teacher discounts and a half-off sale on the final day.  Hometown Life

CRIME NEWS

  • Oakland County Judge Cheryl Matthews spent over two hours hearing both sides on James Crumbley's request for a new trial for the 2021 Oxford High School shooting—defense said key agreements were kept secret and prosecutors said no promise was made—and she will rule in a month.  CBS News Detroit
  • An Oak Park man, Terrell Simms, 39, was charged on Thursday in Ferndale for fatally shooting DoorDash driver Mamadou Diallo on March 9th—police said the deadly act occurred during a road rage incident when a speeding truck nearly hit Diallo’s car—and he now faces charges including second‑degree murder, carrying a concealed weapon and firearm violations.  The Detroit News

ECONOMY NEWS

  • On April 11, UAW President Shawn Fain spoke from the UAW Solidarity House in Detroit and said free trade policies like NAFTA have hurt workers while tariffs could bring back 50,000 autoworker jobs. He called for new labor and trade laws—claims that add to the long-running debate over worker protection.  CBS News Detroit

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • ACLU of Michigan filed a federal lawsuit on Thursday on behalf of four international students whose visas were revoked by Wayne State and the University of Michigan after a review of SEVIS records; the suit seeks an emergency injunction to reinstate their legal status. The case names Kristi Noem—secretary of the Department of Homeland Security—and officials from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement amid similar nationwide visa revocations.  CBS News Detroit
  • The Michigan Supreme Court ruled Thursday that murder convictions for 19- and 20-year-olds cannot automatically carry life without parole — the decision was based on research showing their brains are similar to those of teens and applies retroactively to over 580 offenders now serving the sentence. This ruling now requires courts to review cases individually to determine if life sentences can be imposed.  FOX 2 Detroit
