Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 9th of May.
Good morning, Southfield.
🎓 Education
Michigan students completing their first FAFSA for the 2025–26 school year can enter the Ticket to Tuition sweepstakes by texting CASH to 855-505-8425 by 11:59 p.m. May 16 to win one of 10 $50,000 awards or one of 40 $10,000 prizes (more than 17,000 entries have been logged) (winners will be drawn May 21 at noon).
🌲 Environment
Southfield, Farmington, and Farmington Hills approved a plan to thin the deer herd by hiring USDA sharpshooters to cull deer beginning in January 2026 after a decade-long study and a referendum showed the need for action.
The nighttime culls (using thermal imaging and silencers in parks and private lands) will run annually for three to five years to lessen car-deer crashes and donate venison to local food banks.
